Specialized Surgeries at Triangle Physicians for Women
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgery that utilizes small incisions to diagnose and treat conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancy, and pelvic floor disorders. Instead of “open surgery” that requires more extended hospital stays and recovery time, laparoscopic surgery uses a long, thin device called a laparoscope to view pelvic and abdominal organs. In many cases, your doctor can form a diagnosis and treat the problem all during one procedure.
da Vinci Surgery
The da Vinci robotic surgical system is another form of minimally invasive surgery that requires only a few very small holes in the abdomen. The robotic system is operated by a surgeon and consists of a three-dimensional video camera, a remote control unit, and two or three interactive mechanical arms. This system most commonly is used for hysterectomy or myomectomy but can also be used for surgery for ovarian cysts, endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroids, or abnormal bleeding.
Supracervical Hysterectomy and Complete Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy is a fairly common specialized gynecology surgery that removes the uterus, but many may not know that there are two hysterectomy categories. A supracervical hysterectomy is removing the uterus but not the cervix, while a complete hysterectomy is the removal of the entire uterus, including the cervix. If needed, the fallopian tubes and ovaries may also be removed during a hysterectomy, but only if they are abnormal or affected by a condition such as endometriosis.
For severe symptoms associated with stress urinary incontinence or overactive bladder, incontinence surgeries may be able to help. Various treatment options precede surgery, but if you’ve tried these and incontinence issues continue to impact your quality of life, surgery can offer a long-term solution. Surgical options depend on your condition, so please speak with a doctor to discuss the best solution for your type of urinary incontinence.
Hyteroscopy uses a thin, lighted device that is inserted into the vagina to help diagnose and treat problems of the uterus. Hysteroscopy can be used to remove adhesions, diagnose the cause of a miscarriage, locate an IUD, or perform sterilization.
Endometrial ablation is used to treat many causes of heavy bleeding by dismantling a thin layer of the lining of the uterus. It may also help alleviate symptoms associated with endometriosis.
