If the Triangle Physicians for Women providers have one thing in common, it’s their commitment to providing the best OB/GYN care at every stage of life. Each stage in a woman’s life requires specialty care, and the transition period into these different stages of life brings its own unique set of questions. To help answer some of these questions and provide you with a clear picture of TP4W’s comprehensive services, we’re explaining what our OB/GYN care at every stage of life looks like.
According to experts, a supportive, understanding attitude from a healthcare provider can help facilitate overall improved wellness in female patients. For many women, establishing this physician/midwife-patient relationship begins early on in life. At Triangle Physicians for Women, we typically start seeing patients at the age of 18 unless otherwise referred to us by their pediatrician, or before sexual activity has begun. The age associated with the start of the menstrual cycle is around 12 and a half years old. Even before a girl’s first period, it’s more likely that her body has already undergone some changes. A pediatrician is generally able to handle most questions related to puberty and development, including issues with your daughter’s period, such as moderate cramping. By the time a woman turns 18, it’s time to begin annual exams. Beginning annual exams at the age of 18 allows for a relationship to be established before other tests, such as pap smears, become necessary at age 21. Making your OB/GYN care a priority early on in life can help set patients on the right track to lifelong health and wellness.
OB/GYN care is essential in the reproductive stage of a woman’s life. TP4W is here to support you on every step of your reproductive journey, from issues with infertility to midwifery and obstetric care. The midwifery team at TP4W consists of six certified nurse-wives specializing in all aspects of reproductive care, including pre-conception counseling, early pregnancy education, nutrition counseling, routine prenatal visits, VBAC support and counseling, 24/7 labor and delivery support, postpartum care, and breastfeeding support. Our team also provides comprehensive obstetric care, including labs and testing, ultrasounds, pregnancy counseling, education, and more. After childbirth, our providers continue to support you with various services related to postpartum care.
In addition to obstetric services, routine gynecological exams continue to be an important part of a woman’s overall health in this stage of life, from annual exams like physicals and well-woman exams to specialized services like evaluation treatment for urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction, as well as other surgical procedures. Another essential service provided by TP4W is mammography. Mammography is currently the most effective screening tool for breast cancer and has been shown to decrease breast cancer mortality. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, women should begin receiving annual mammograms at the age of 40 to help detect any early stages of breast cancer, but if you have a family history of breast cancer, your doctor may recommend that you start to get annual mammograms even earlier. At TP4W, we make it convenient to stay up to date on mammograms. We can accommodate a mammogram at our practice in the same appointment as your annual GYN appointment. We can almost always accommodate a mammogram at your appointment with us, even you haven’t already made an appointment in advance.
Menopause typically takes place around the age of 51 and is defined as the final menstrual period and is usually confirmed when a woman has missed her periods for 12 consecutive months. Menopause is associated with reduced functioning of the ovaries due to aging, resulting in lower estrogen levels and other hormones. It marks the permanent end of fertility. Menopause is a normal, natural part of life, but various treatment options are available to manage the symptoms associated with this stage of life.
