We are continuing our Meet the Providers series with our very own Heather Helton, MSN, CNM. With decades of experience working in obstetrics, Heather has become central to our midwifery care at Triangle Physicians for Women. Our team of nurse-midwives is a cohesive and experienced group of professionals who work together to provide you the best care possible for your pregnancy and overall healthcare needs. At our practice, we believe in providing high-quality women’s health care in a caring and compassionate environment, which is why we think it’s important to give our patients a closer look at our providers so they have more information at the time of their appointments. I am a true Midwesterner, raised in Illinois and Iowa; and relocated to North Carolina fifteen years ago. I’ve worked in various levels of acuity in Women’s Health from low-risk to high-risk obstetric care, to healthcare administration and education. I completed my midwifery residency with Triangle OB (with Dr. Vulgaropulos and Dr. Grana), and then joined the practice after graduation in 2011.
Bachelors: University of Wisconsin
Masters: East Carolina University
What are your areas of interest?
One of my favorite populations are teens. Establishing gynecological care as a teen can be intimidating and scary. It can also shape the expectation and perspective of future care. I always strive to provide a good foundation for young people to have access to factual and judgment-free care. I also have an interest in perinatal mood disorders.
What first introduced you to midwifery?
My first exposure to midwives came when I was in nursing school, working as a nursing assistant on a Labor & Delivery unit. I appreciated the way they broke down concepts for me so I could learn, and I loved the personable interaction they had with the families they provided care for.
What motivates you?
I believe we are called to serve others, and the impact we can have on someone can last a lifetime. Our area of expertise involves some of the most vulnerable areas a person has. I want to empower others to have comfort in their own care.
Do you have a certain philosophy or outlook when it comes to practicing medicine and providing care?
I tend to approach care as if my family member were being cared for, and what kind of care would I expect to be given to them. I don’t believe you need to work in healthcare to receive exceptional healthcare, but you should expect your provider to give you evidence-based information so you can make the best decision for yourself.
A little more about Heather
I am married with two kids (one in college and one in high school). I lead the medical team for our child’s award-winning high school marching band (our favorite trip was performing at the Outback Bowl) and will be sad when our youngest graduates next year and I have to hang up my #medicmom shirt. I am also adjunct faculty at East Carolina University (College of Nursing). And when I’m not in the office, I am a social media creator @amodernmidwife covering topics in Women’s Health.
